In school and college, I used to participate in debates. It happened to me by an accident and Dr. Younus Butt was the first person who said to me that I can do this. I said, how can I do this? But he said, No Veena you have the potential you can do this, and this landed me on the sets of ‘Ham Sab Umeed Say Hain’ on Geo TV, where I imitated Nadia Khan and that was a huge hit.

Do false rumors and controversies upset you?

In the beginning, yes they did really upset me a lot but now I think I’m much mature and brave to handle them. They don’t upset me now.

What was the most memorable role in your acting career?

Makeup in a Matte Look

Every woman who has to deal with a skin that tends to get oily easily and needs to control sebum is a follower of what we call a matte makeup. You shouldn't be afraid of this type of makeup as long as you know it flatters you and suits your skin type. If you have dry skin, a matte makeup can look good just after applying it, but at the end of the day your skin might be even more dry and with an unaesthetic look. Even though it is not that easy to handle, here are a few tips for a matte makeup for you to do at home.
Matte makeup can be a tricky business as it requires certain moderation since a too thick powder or foundation coat would look unnatural and unflattering. Despite the fact that sometimes, especially in photos, a matte skin looks perfect, in reality it is not totally matte and it has a natural shine throughout the day due to sebum. If you want a perfect matte look you need to choose mattifying products both for makeup and skin care.
One should keep in mind that you don't have to stop the sebum secretion entirely at skin level, but you have to reduce it quantitatively as this oily substance is the skin's weapon against noxious external factors, such as pollution or sun rays that are responsible for the premature aging of your skin.
Before starting the whole makeup process one needs to pay a lot of attention to the products used for the skin. In order to prevent the skin getting oily during the day and control sebum, you need a special makeup base. The routine says that you should first apply a moisturizing cream and foundation. However, if what you want is a matte result, you should apply, after the moisturizer and before the foundation, a mattifying makeup base. You can use it on the entire face or just on the areas with problems, such as the T-zone. In case your skin becomes oily extremely fast, forget about the moisturizer.
A smart investment would be the a moisturizing cream that controls the sebum at skin level. This cream has a double action, moisturizing and mattifying, keeping your skin fresh and matte for a longer period of time and avoiding the oily and shiny look a normal moisturizer would give you. This way you don't have to use tones of powder that adds a mask aspect. Moreover, you are not obliged to redo your makeup throughout the day. It is advisable to see a dermatologist or a cosmetician in order to find the best products for your skin type and issues.

If your skin is mixed, try products that are specially created for keeping under control the sebum in the T-zone. These products can be applied after the moisturizer, but they are also others that you are allowed to apply during the day over makeup without having to use the powder again. If you have problems with a shiny nose, then is that area you should control using a mattifying or oil control face primer and a matte pressed powder on your nose.
When it comes to doing the perfect matte makeup, the result stands in the texture of the products you use and not the quantity. You should go for a semi-matte or a matte foundation and use the concealer only where you need to. Also, avoid a translucent powder as you'll never obtain the result you are looking for regardless the quantity you apply. However, a matte makeup should start with a primer. You can use a mattifying face powder which acts like a primer and apply it on your face.

You also need a blush in earthy tones and apply it on the cheekbones and nose. Getting matte lips is one of the easiest things ever. The first step in obtaining matte, plump lips, before starting the actual makeup process, is to exfoliate your lips using a scrub in order to get rid of all the dry skin as this might give an unaesthetic look.
Afterwards, use a lip balm that will soften and moisturize the lips. Apply a gentle layer and wait a couple of minutes allowing it enters to the skin. This step is crucial as usually matte lipsticks are made from powdered pigments and if the lips are not properly moisturized they will look dry and chapped. Take a lip liner in the same color as that of your lipstick and slowly make a contour. Then, fill the contour with gentle moves at lip surface. Using a thin eye brush apply on the lips a face powder that will help set the contour and prevent glossy lips.

Now its time to apply a matte lipstick starting from the center of the lips towards the outer corners. You can choose a nude shade, a bold red or a flirty pink. Use a lip brush to fix everything and make the contour invisible. Pay a lot of attention when applying the lip liner as a too sharp line can look unnatural. As a final step, remove all lipstick excess using a tissue. This will also remove any shiny effect and give that beautiful matte look.
For the eyes, choose an eyeshadow with a matte texture and use it only after applying a soft coat of makeup base in order to avoid the eyeshadow to gather into the creases of the skin. Then, apply the mascara and define your eyebrows using an eyebrow pencil.

But … what happens when the day ends and your skin needs to breathe? There is an ''eternal forgotten in the beauty of this: the process of makeup remover on a daily basis.

Photogenic Makeup Tips

There are many sources to help you learn how to apply makeup. However, not all makeup is photogenic. A camera captures light and color slightly different than our eyes.

You can greatly enhance your natural beauty with some simple knowledge.
Hiring a makeup artist is not absolutely necessary. With some practice you can do a great job yourself and it is a valuable skill to learn for daily application. Start out by visiting makeup counters and have them show you how to apply foundation and color. The following are some tips of mine on specific items; at the end of the article I have included some of my favorite products.

*Sparkles - While beautiful in real life sparkly makeup and powders will show up in photographs as little white specks on your skin. Keep this in mind if you wish to avoid white specks on your cheeks, cleavage and eyes. Most "shimmery" eye shadows photograph well as long as they do not contain glitter.

*Blush - A hint of color on your cheeks will add a beautiful glow. But remember to apply lightly; it's easier to digitally add a little color than it is to take it away. Have a salesperson at a cosmetic counter or a makeup artist show you how to use blush to contour your face and always keep in mind a little goes a long way.

*Eyes - Use a light hand when lining your lower lashes. A heavy line is not flattering and you don't want it to smudge; this would create shadows under your eyes. Practice using powder and a very fine brush either wet or dry. This gives the most natural results with just the right amount of enhancement. Use mascara that matches your hair and complexion. Be careful not to apply so much that your lashes become clumpy. Clumps will show in close up pictures and are extremely difficult to fix digitally.

8 Tips for Applying Makeup for photos and Videos

Camera Application Makeup Tip #1

Skin, The Canvass: Before you apply makeup, start with smooth, toned and moisturized skin. If necessary, give yourself a facial or scrub treatment. This minimizes uneven or artificial looking makeup application and promotes a healthy, glowing look.

Camera Application Makeup Tip #2

Minimize Shadows: As photos are two-dimensional, the camera ages subjects by enhancing dark, fine lines and wrinkles. To compensate, gently apply a lighter shade of concealer makeup to darker areas: around the eyes, crevices and expression lines.

Using upward strokes, next apply a light layer of foundation makeup over the face including lips. Blend makeup at the edges. Except for corrective work, use foundation makeup colors closely matching the natural skin color.

Camera Application Makeup Tip #3

Bronze or Blush: Various makeup effects can be achieved with blush. Bronzer makeup powder is widely successful and produces a natural or lightly sculpted look, depending on its application.

To apply powder blush: blow off excess from the brush and apply lightly to cheekbones and above the outer corners of eyes to the temple.

For a makeup application guide, make a wide peace sign with a hand. Rotate 90 degrees towards your nose. Palms out, place the point of the "V" at your hairline and align with the corner of your eye and the bottom finger resting on the cheekbone. Focus color at or one finger below this area on the cheek, and at or above this area around the eyes.

Apply a second thin layer on checks and blend lightly at edges as needed.

How to Apply Makeup For Photos:

Everybody wants to look great in photos and pictures.
Unfortunately not everyone is blessed with a natural beauty –
some of us have to work harder in order to look great in photos,
some have to conceal blemishes /pimples, discolorations, large pores/,
other have to change their hairstyle and clothing.
If you are going to be photographed do not forget to take
your makeup bag with you as you will need a few makeup products.

A good makeup primer will hide imperfections like, large pores, small pimple,
skin discolorations, spots, freckles and so on. There are even eyelid primers
that conceal the yellowing hints under your eyes.

Before you apply makeup, start with smooth, toned and moisturized skin.
If necessary, give yourself a facial or scrub treatment. This minimizes uneven
or artificial looking makeup application and promotes a healthy, glowing look.

As photos are two-dimensional, the camera ages subjects by enhancing dark,
fine lines and wrinkles. To compensate, gently apply a lighter shade
of concealer makeup to darker areas: around the eyes, crevices
   and expression lines.

Using upward strokes, next apply a light layer of foundation makeup
over the face including lips. Blend makeup at the edges.
Except for corrective work, use foundation makeup colors
closely matching the natural skin color.

Unless you like the look, or have the eyes for it, avoid harsh lines,
or the raccoon look, it makes the eyes look smaller and deeper set.

Try a smoky-colored eyeliner pencil, and smudge a bit if necessary.
With liquid eyeliner, an option is to dot the eyeliner next to the eyelash
base rather than create a solid line. For a different look, limit liquid
eyeliner application to the top eyelid and/or the outer corners of the eyes.

Smoky eye shadow applied above the eyelids and blended with the outer
corners of the eyes also creates a desirable effect; a highlighted
   brow area enhances this effect.

Most lips benefit from definition, even when lipstick is not generally used.
For a natural but polished look, try a shade or two darker than your lip color,
apply lip pencil, smudge lips a bit and apply a little gloss, or lipstick.

The key is to consider that images are two dimensional, so shadows
and highlighted areas may need to be emphasized, de-emphasized
or even simulated, for the best overall effect. Employ makeup tips
for problem areas based on your photo experience with similar
   lighting conditions and adjust accordingly.

Beauty tips for Anti Ageing

  • Ageing and Hair Falling – In 50’s age, Women are undergoing hormonal changes in your body due to menopause, which leads to decline in the female hormone, estrogen, making the male hormone relatively hyperactive. This leads to androgenic alopecia or male pattern balding. Dry skin is one of the other effects of these hormonal changes. For this skin you need to get an oil massage once a week.
  • Darker Upper Lips : Lighten Up – A dark upper lips is normal; the lower lip looks pink because of lip biting, which is very common. It is important to break the vicious cycle of lip biting and skin dehydration. For this, try using a petroleum jelly-based lip balm several times a day. Apply a lightening cream containing kojic acid and vitamin C in very small quantities on lip mergins at night.
  • Darker underarms – It is embarrassment to use sleeveless tops if your underarms are darker. There are several reasons for darker underarms, using deodorants directly on your skin, hair-removing creams, friction in case of excess weight and an existing hormonal imbalance. Avoid using deodorants directly pn your skin. Use a lightening agent containing mild hydroquinone locally at night. Use in very small quantity and avoid sun exposure while you are using the cream. Dust on an antifungal powder to keep the area dry.
  • Oily Skin & Dust – Teenage girls glands are very active, producing sebum in excess which gets deposited on the surface of your skin, making it look oily. It can cause acne. Avoid oily products and preferably use gel-based cosmetics. Mix some calamine in your sunscreen as it will absorb excess oil and keep your skin dry.

Why Fashion Matters

As a fashion journalist I confront a variety of reactions when I declare what is currently my calling. I am now fairly used to getting the more-than-occasional raised eye-brow of disdain accompanied by the question “what-is-a-young-lady-of-your-academic-backgroug-writing-about-fashion?” and “Fashion-is-ok-but-why-don’t-yo u-diversify-your-column?” Of course the fact that this, specifically, is a fashion column doesn’t really get through to most of them. Usually, I just take the high road, shrug my shoulders and let the comments pass. After all, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. The problem however, is that to matter, opinions need to be informed. Anyone can heckle - the true critic is a rare commodity.

Fashion has suffered its share of browbeating and scorn. The lament echoes around us all the time, “Why can’t we move away from fashion toward bigger, more meaningful things?” But viewing fashion only as a liability, fruitless obsession or vain indulgence is as shallow a look into its social ramifications, as fashion itself is usually made out to be. Yet there is the ambivalence that goads even the harshest mocker into the fold and makes a willing viewer out of him/her. What keeps even the most derisive audience coming back for more is the very depth that they fail to see. One may not care much about the people involved in fashion (as one may not care much about the people involved in politics or banking), but to dismiss it as a world that adds nothing to the real one is simply childish.

To understand fashion and what it truly implies for a culture I take a step back from my undertaking to catalogue fashion history. This is my attempt to explain why fashion is important, so that the voices, that sometimes emerge, to scorn all fashion and belittle the publication that chooses to include it as a worthy subject despite its “inimitable wisdom”, granting it instead the “veneration usually reserved for Zeus” may finally find a more satisfactory answer than a curt “well, I got you reading my ‘techno-babble’ to the very end, didn’t I”.

Fashion may be perceived in two ways: In the first case, fashion may be viewed with positive values and associations as both attractive and functional. In the second case, it may be attributed a negative value and find associations of trickery and triviality. The negative view, quite familiar to us, snubs fashion deeming it as inferior, as silly, as creating false or misguided desires and as propagating bogus and foolish views. Relegating it a status of being purely cosmetic and largely unreal or synthetic, it effectively damns fashion and strips it off any possibility of value-creation for society. Of course, there are an enormous number of bad eggs who have taken the reins of our fashion industry, whose actions only cause fashion to live up to such accusations. But the blame is incorrectly placed.

The positive view, largely ignored, places fashion with the creative arts. More meaningfully, it sees fashion design as an instrument of cultural production as fashion and clothing play an integral part in the world that we live in, both in the creation of value at the manufacturing stage and the addition of value at the end-use stage. As fashion becomes an essential part of our everyday reality, unlike conventional art forms that are not accessible to all, it gains special status.

Fashion’s role as useful art is not its only claim to meaning. It also becomes important when we consider its role in the communication of political ideology within a country. Fashion and politics have always gone hand in hand. Ex-PM Zafarullah Jamali’s ban on the fashion show for being un-Islamic is just one barefaced example of the fact. But even more basically if we consider the semantic origins of fashion we discover just how profoundly the two are entwined.

The very word “fashion” is derived from the Latin “factio”, which gave birth to the politically sensed “faction”. The word “faction” applies to differences and conflicts among groups with further connotations of the possession and exercise of power by them. It also implies the emergence of radical groups who form their own sub-culture within a mainstream culture that they find unacceptable. The most visible signifier of their differences and/or their rebellion comes across in their clothing i.e. in fashion. We know what ideology a man wearing a green turban over white shalwar kameez (the shalwar raised above the ankle) represents. So, we can gauge the temperament, aspirations and views of people by the way they choose to dress. In this way, fashion communicates culture and beliefs and becomes the tool whereby people declare their differences.

Going further than art and politics, fashion also becomes a signifier of class structures. Such is the nature of social class that the elite never mix well with the commoners. We live under hegemonic structures, whether we like to admit as much or not, and we use fashion to not only preserve our differences but also to legitimize them. When the well-heeled order haute couture they order dresses that establish them as different. Wearing that expensive outfit becomes a statement that seals these differences once and for all. Thus, fashion is used as a fence to keep away lesser citizens by the elite.

But it doesn’t stop there. The commoners use it as a bridge to become nearer to their social superiors. This explains the pathological rush towards designer labels, taking place today, and also leads to the branding of fashion as meaningless. But the truth is that fashion is an aspiration towards creating meaning. Such class struggle may seem frivolous and fashion may seem to be the culprit. But fashion is only a symptom that communicates the illness. The illness lies in society itself.

According to Frieha Altaf, “Fashion in Pakistan is and always has been for the elite. It has two effects: a trickle-up effect, when street fashion comes into the main-stream; and a trickle-down effect, when fashion moves from the elite to the masses. Barring the eighties when Afghani kurtas, shalwars and jewelry became the rage, fashion in Pakistan has always been trickle-down”. Over the world, fashion has not gone strictly one way or another. It has been used to convey anti-establishment feelings through looks such as punk and grunge while it has legitimized the establishment by classic and structured trends. Here, since things have been less satisfactory on the renegade front, with no real movement coming together using dress as its signifier, we have taken the easy way out and chosen to condemn fashion.

Fashion has a cultural profile that saves it from being trivial. Those who dislike differences of ideology and class are usually the ones that view fashion negatively, call it shallow and hold it responsible for creating misguided desires. Those who come to accept that there is no easy utopia and that differences amongst people will remain, can see fashion for what it truly is: an outlet for creativity, a tool of cultural production and the means by which cultural differences find peaceful voices.
